golf course and valley views. A number of Rancho Bernardo communities also provide
housing opportunities for seniors seeking assisted living. Rancho Bernardo housing
is well maintained with development controlled by a strict set of covenants and
restrictions. Residents can enjoy the ambiance of a well-planned suburban area
within easy striking distance of all of San Diego's attractions. Rancho Bernardo is part
of the City of San Diego, but its location and distinctive ambiance set it apart almost
like a city in its own right. RB, as it is often called, is a master planned residential
community made up of individual neighborhoods and shopping areas. There are
approximately 45,000 residents in an area spanning 7,000 acres with about 17,000
homes.
Access to anywhere in San Diego County is easy. Interstate 15 runs directly through
Rancho Bernardo, with State Route 56 just south of and Highway 78 to the north. San
Diego International Airport is less than 30 minutes away. It is geographically located
about 20 miles north-north-east of downtown San Diego, immediately north of Carmel
Mountain Ranch, northwest of the city of Poway and south of Escondido.
Rancho Bernardo’s pre-history starts in 1789 with a land grant from the king of Spain
as La Cañada de San Bernardo (or "The Gorge of Saint Bernard"). As the early name
implies, the topography of RB consists of canyons and rolling hills. Rancho Bernardo
circa 1800 was colorful and volatile with a population combination of indigenous Native
Americans and ranchers. The Indian bands left behind their pictographs of life along
with and the implements they used to grind corn and acorns. The trail they followed to
the ocean coast is still visible. Next came the conquistadors looking for riches and the
padres who tended cattle and grapes in the valleys and hills.
The present-day area is a sprawling community of largely affluent homes, shopping
malls, golf courses and office parks. Homes in Rancho Bernardo enjoy the benefits of
a well-planned residential community, providing the residents with easy access to
shopping, excellent restaurants, and a good number of service businesses as well as
high tech and financial companies. Rancho Bernardo’s business park is within a
conveniently laid out commercial core of 685 acres and is home to a number of well-
known corporate offices--Sony Electronics, SAIC, Siemens, BAE, Hewlett-Packard,
Cymer and many more. Some 50,000 workers are employed in this park of low slung,
well-landscaped office buildings.
The Bernardo Winery is an inviting place to taste wines, dine, or visit village shops.
The Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort & Spa is a beautiful Southern California Resort
and Conference Center. Dinner at “El Bizcocho” which was recently named the Critic's
Choice for "Best of the Best" by San Diego Magazine and voted the city's highest-
rated restaurant by the Zagat Survey is a memorable, elegant experience. The
Rancho Bernardo Inn is also famous for its beautiful golf course.
Rancho Bernardo residents and visitors can choose from a selection of golf courses.
Oaks North Golf Course is a favorite executive course in the area. The Rancho
Bernardo Inn Golf Course and Country Club of Rancho Bernardo each offer
championship courses.
